Selling Basics

Protecting Yourself

In some cases, a home sale can also be an invitation for danger. Here are some things you can do to make the process safer.

It is our company policy to have one of our licensed sales professionals accompany all showings. (unless a lock box has been agreed to). However, because you have a for sale sign out front, buyers may be inclined to “drop by”. You should never let a stranger into your home. Please let the party know that you have retained a real estate broker to handle all showings. Advise them to contact your agent. Obtain their name and phone number and let your agent know about the contact.

When a showing has been scheduled:

  • Lock up and hide collectibles and valuables
  • Remember "For Sale" signs bring in buyers. Do not allow your children to open doors to strangers.
  • If you have pets, make sure they are controlled
  • Remove any dangerous items from your home
  • It is advisable that the owner(s) not be present during a showing As buyers may not be inclined to provide the agent with helpful feedback as they may not want to voice any concerns about the property in front of a seller.
  • Talk to your sales professional about additional safety tips to help protect you and your family.
