Jim moved to the Lakes Region from Short Hills, NJ. He started his real estate career in 1977. He opened his first real estate office, (Century 21) Lakes Region Realty Group in Moultonborough in 1980. His company would grow to have nearly 50 agents and become the areas number one office in the sale of waterfront properties on Lake Winnipesaukee multiple times. In 2014, Jim sold the sales division of his company to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Verani Realty – the number one real estate firm in New Hampshire. Jim now leads the Lakes Region Realty Group, a boutique real estate team within Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Verani Realty, with a specialization in the waterfront and water-access markets of New Hampshire's Lakes Region.

Jim works alongside his son, Dan, and associate Forrest Letarte. Jim remains active providing consulting and development services as well as customized home marketing and seller representation services to clients in the Lakes Region. Jim has negotiated (or overseen the negotiation of) thousands of waterfront transactions, including some of the largest and more complex transactions in the Lakes Region.

Jim has also been involved in the development of many Lakes Region residential and luxury lakeside communities having taken these projects from initial land planning and design through the construction and marketing stages. Jim’s projects include: Harbor Pines, Hemlock Harbor, Deerpoint on Lake Winnipesaukee, Crosswinds on Lake Winnipesaukee and the luxury Adirondack community of Iroquois on Lake Winnipesaukee. Jim also developed commercial parcels in Moultonborough including Harbor Square, Harbor Village and 12 Whittier Highway. With over 40 years in the business, Jim Mardis has developed close relationships with many of the finest builders, home inspectors, appraisers, lenders as well as the other top agents in the Lakes Region. As well, leading law firms, lending institutions and economic research firms have recommended Jim and his firm throughout the years. Regional and local newspapers and other media such as New Hampshire Public Radio have contacted Jim for his comment on current real estate trends. Certified appraisers often contact Jim for information about sales activity and market trends to assist them in the accurate preparation of their appraisals.

Jim’s flagship website, LakesRegionRealEstate.com, was the areas FIRST real estate website established in 1995. Today, after numerous updates, the site is widely recognized as one of the most visited websites for real estate in New Hampshire's Lakes Region. Jim's expertise spans across many market and economic cycles. He has helped clients across the Lakes Region from Wolfeboro to Governor’s Island, and has a particular specialization in the waterfront markets of Moultonborough and Meredith where he has helped clients achieve their real estate goals since 1977.
