Gilford (EST. 1778) was originally a part of Gilmanton, and first named Gunstock Parish. In 1812, Captain Lemuel B. Mason, who had fought in the Revolutionary War and later retired to Gunstock Parish, successfully proposed a name change to "Guilford", named after a battle he had fought in. Due to a clerical error he name became contracted to the current spelling of "Gilford".
Gilford is know as tourists town that offers year round use of the area mountains and lakes. Homes dot the shoreline of Lake Winnipausakee, much sought after Governors Island and along side Gunstock Mountain. Located next the city of Laconia, it's the ideal community for locals and visitors who are seeking the natural beauty of the area and the convenieces of suburbia.
Located 99 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts and 31 miles north of Concord,N.H.
Students from the town attend Gilford Elementary School serving grades (K-6), Gilford Middle School serving grades (7-8), and Gilford High School.
