Holderness (EST. 1751) acquired its name when Governor Wentworth named the town after Robert Darcy, 4th Earl of Holderness, England. Holderness started as a farming and fishing community. Later the southwestern corner of town became a mill village, getting power from the Squam River, with it's falls that drop into the Pemigewasset River. In the 19th century tourists discovered Holderness with it's scenic mountains and lakes. Today, Holderness remains a popular resort location, with shorelines on both Squam Lake and Little Squam Lake. Enjoying all that the lakes and mountains have to offer, a visit to Holderness can be a fun-filled family vacation or a quiet respite from the hustle of city life. Come for a visit, you may just end up staying.
